Class Descriptions
These level placements are subject to change at the beginning of the session based on individual ability and comfort.
Parent/Tot: Ages 1.5 – 3 years
This class is designed to introduce infants and toddlers to the joys of swimming. Parents learn water adjustment techniques to help orient their child to water, including bubble blowing and underwater exploration. Infants and toddlers will be encouraged to blow bubbles, play with water toys, float on front and back, and experience reaching and kicking, later leading to proper stroke development. Goggles will not be used in parent tot.
Your child cannot enter the water unassisted; this is their first water experience, and they cannot be in the water independently.
Toddler: Ages 2.5 – 4 years
This class will focus on play-based learning to help toddlers get comfortable in the water without a parent present. They will work in small groups to become more independent with beginner skills, including bubble blowing, putting their face in the water, floating on their front and back, supported kicking, and tipping into the pool. Goggles will not be used in the toddler class.
Your child can enter the water without a parent; they are still new to swim lessons and may be more comfortable in a smaller class
Hoya 1: Ages 3.5 – 5.5 years
This class is designed for young children to learn water adjustment and water exploration. Skills taught include bubble blowing, putting their face in the water, independent front and back floats, independent front and back kick, and water safety. This class is designed for children who have had some lessons previously and are comfortable separating from their parents. Goggles will not be used in Hoya 1.
Can your child get in the water unassisted? The child has had experience in the water with a parent and is ready to explore water safety and swimming independently with an instructor.
After the session, children should be able to put their face in the water, blow bubbles, bob while holding on to the wall, float on their stomach and back, and kick.
Hoya 2: Ages 5 – 7 years
At this level, students will be divided into smaller groups based on their abilities and work with instructors to enhance their current skills and introduce new ones. They will improve their front and back kicking skills so that they can flip back and forth between the two kicks halfway across the pool. They will also learn to use armstrokes and backstrokes halfway across the pool. Goggles may be used in Hoya 2.
Is your child comfortable going underwater?
After the session, children should be able to confidently submerge underwater, coordinate kicks and swimming strokes, and float and glide independently on front and back.
Hoya 3: Ages 6.5 – 9 years
The swimmers will be grouped based on their ability and work with instructors to enhance current skills. They will learn to incorporate side breathing into their arm strokes to do freestyle across the pool. They will also improve their backstroke, so they can complete a full pool length. Goggles may be used in Hoya 3.
Can your child kick with a kickboard and swim short distances independently?
After the session, children should have learned basic elements of freestyle and backstroke.
Hoya 4: Ages 8 – 11.5 years
Hoya 4 swimmers will continue to work on freestyle and backstroke by building endurance to swim laps and improving stroke technique. They will also start beginner breaststroke, explore diving, and learn the fundamentals of treading water. Goggles may be used in Hoya 4.
Child should come into Hoya 4 able to swim freestyle almost halfway across.
After the session, children should be comfortable with the breaststroke, diving, and the fundamentals of treading water.
