Lifeguard Certifications
The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course is designed to teach participants the skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatics emergencies. The Lifeguard Certification includes First Aid/CPR/AED and is valid for two years.
Registration
To register, log in to your online account and select the appropriate class. If you do not have an online account, you will need to create an account . For help, refer to our Online Account Management page. Please note that Georgetown University students, faculty, and staff do not need to create an account and can log in with a Georgetown NetID.
Prerequisites:
- Must be 15 years of age by completion of course.
- Ability to swim 300 yards continuously swimming demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing swimming freestyle and breaststroke.
- Ability to tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs.
- Ability to swim 20 yards of freestyle or breaststroke, submerge to 10 ft. and pick up a 10 lb object, holding it with both hands return 20 yards and exit pool in 1 minute and 40 seconds without using steps or a ladder.
- Successful completion of approximately 9 hours of Online Blended-Learning Coursework before the first day of the course.
Policies:
- Registration will be acknowledged on a first-come, first served basis.
- Registration must include valid payment for confirmation.
- Payment can be made online using a credit card.
- Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment numbers will be canceled.
- Attendance is required for all classes within each session. No exceptions! Each session includes three (3) classes scheduled as below. The first class of each session will include prerequisite testing.
- Refund Policy: If a student does not pass the prerequisite training, all but $50 of the course fees will be refunded. No refunds will be issued to any registrant who withdraws on or after the scheduled class start (unless the registrant does not pass the prerequisite training).
- Non-GU affiliated members will be required to submit proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test the first day of the course.
Lifeguard Certification Courses

Friday, February 14th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, February 15th from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Sunday, February 16th from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Each session is a 3-day course and is taught using a Blended Learning format. This includes 9 hours of online work to be completed before the first day of the course.
Fees:
$200 Georgetown Students
$250 Campus Recreation Members
$300 Non-Members
Fee includes CPR pocket mask and certification fee.

Yates Field House, Georgetown University
Minimum enrollment: 5 or class will be canceled.
Lifeguard Recertification Courses
An abbreviated lifeguarding course that reviews course content in addition to practice and testing of skills and emergency team response. This class is taught in a blended learning format and the assigned online portion(s) (accessed via mobile desktop or tablet) must be completed prior to each instructor-led session. To participate in the recertification course, participants must possess a Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid (current certification or certification expired by 30 days at maximum). Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid valid for 2 years.
Attendance is mandatory for all class dates in a session. No refunds unless the class is canceled.

$100 for Students and Campus Recreation Members
$125 for Non-Students
Fee includes the price of pocket mask.
Minimum enrollment: 4
