About

Dedicated towards the cultivation of the ‘whole’ person, Campus Recreation provides a variety of opportunities for all students to enhance their university experience through recreation, fitness, and well-being. Through our various sport and recreation programs, students are given the opportunity to connect with each other and experience personal growth in a fun, comfortable, and challenging yet safe environment.

At Yates Field House – the university’s recreation facility – extensive fitness and recreation programming is available not only for students but also staff, faculty, alumni, and local community members. Yates facilities and equipment are dedicated to serving the fitness needs of all our students and members.  Program areas such as group fitness, aquatics, racquet sports, intramural sports, and Red Cross certifications provide daily opportunities for students and members to improve physical and mental wellness.

Furthermore, Campus Recreation is one of the largest employers of student staff on campus. Each year, our student lifeguards, instructors, attendants and sport officials support our professional staff in offering some of the best fitness programs in the Washington, D.C. area.

Mission

The mission of Georgetown University Campus Recreation is to provide the Georgetown campus and surrounding community with fun, inclusive, engaging, and educational fitness and wellness programming that promotes personal growth and the development of lifelong skill sets.

History

The Yates Memorial Field House was opened in the fall of 1979 and named in honor of Gerard F. Yates, S.J. Father Yates taught classics, history and political science as an educational apostolate; as an assistant, associate, and full professor. At one time, he was chairman of the political science department and also Dean of the Graduate School. Outside the classroom, he vigorously promoted activities that continue to strengthen the quality of student life on campus.
