Leisure and Recreation Education

The “Leisure and Recreation Department” (LRED) offers a variety of non-credit recreation classes for Georgetown University students. Courses include a range of introductory and intermediate instruction in recreation skills and activities that promote and maintain a healthy and more active lifestyle.

Ballet

This course is an introduction to the basic principles of ballet. Concentration is placed on learning basic barre and center work. Technique classes are offered twice a week. No background in dance is required to register!

Introduction to Ballroom Dance

This course is an introduction to the basic principles and history of American Ballroom Dance. Students will learn the Swing, Foxtrot, Waltz and Cha-Cha. Students will learn several variations for each dance as well as lead/follow technique. No background in dance is required.

Golf

This course is an introduction to the game of golf. The course teaches the basics of golf, golf etiquette and rules of the game. Students will have the opportunity to work on their golf swing and putting in the Yates indoor driving range. No experience in golf is required.

Modern Dance

This course is an introduction to the basic principles and history of modern dance. Students participate in dance technique classes twice a week. Every class includes a warm-up period and short routines. No background in dance is required.

Strength Training I & II

This course is designed to meet competencies needed for the students to understand and perform the exercise movements unique to the Strength and Conditioning profession.

Proper warm-up modalities, movement preparation techniques, safety protocols, lifting and or weight room etiquette, lifting technique and pattern spotting, as well as cool down and recovery modalities. Training methods emphasized will be Olympic Weightlifting movements as well as traditional Lifting. The course will provide the student with the abilities to teach other students or athletes to perform specific movements in a safe and effective manner. 

Beginners Swimming

This course is designed for students who wish to overcome their fear of the water and learn basic swim skills. Students will learn and practice key elements of the crawl stroke and back float and stroke. Student should provide their own swim goggles.

Squash

This course includes instruction from basic skill levels through intermediate levels of play. Students will be introduced to the rules of Squash and will be challenged to improve level of play and overall fitness. Racquets will be provided for students for class sessions.

Tennis I

This class is intended for students who are new to tennis or have taken some basic lessons. Each class will focus on the development of excellent tennis technique. Classes will include several drills intended to develop proper tennis form.

Tennis II

This class is intended for students with basic skills and some tennis experience. The class reinforces the proper techniques for ground strokes, serve and volley. Students will perform several drills intended to improve shot making and court positioning. The course will also cover strategic concepts for singles and doubles tennis.

Yoga

In this class, students will learn and master a basic Hatha Yoga routine. Instruction will be given on the five principles of Yoga to pursue physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
