What is Health Coaching?
The International Consortium for Health & Wellness Coaching (ICHWC) defines health coaching as partnering with clients seeking self-directed, lasting changes, aligned with their values, which promote health and wellness and, thereby, enhance well-being. In the course of their work, health and wellness coaches display unconditional positive regard for their clients and a belief in their capacity for change, and honoring that each client is an expert on his or her life, while ensuring that all interactions are respectful and non-judgmental.
Georgetown University’s model of health coaching is built on the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis or care of the whole person. Specifically, we focus on personal growth and development encompassing mind, body, and spirit, addressing the following areas:
- Healthy Eating
- Lifelong Learning
- Social Connection
What To Expect From Health Coaching
- Coaches help you discover what is most important to you. They listen to your concerns and help you develop your vision of optimal health. This may include the use of assessments, powerful questions, mind-body exercises such as imagery, and other techniques.
- Coaches spend time exploring the specific goals and action steps you wish to address.
- You and your coach work in partnership to maximize the possibility of your success. This may include discussion of potential barriers and strategies to overcome them.
- Coaches support you by providing accountability, affirmation, and facilitating development of subsequent goals. Coaches may provide additional resources for making healthy behavior changes.
Health coaching sessions last 60 minutes and can be held at Yates Field House, client campus offices, other quiet spaces on campus, or by phone.
