If you have ever struggled with reaching personal health goals such as craving control, optimal weight, stress management, or if you are managing behavior related changes due to a pre-diabetes diagnosis or recent cardiac event, you may want to consider working with a health coach. Think of the health coach like a mountain guide, we don’t climb the mountain for you but guide and support you on the way up.

The Yates Health Coaches are trained to help you move towards your optimal vision of health in body, mind and spirit. The coach partners with you to co-design a plan of action and develop tools and the necessary structure to support you on the path towards your goals. We keep you accountable and moving forward. Many clients reach goals that enhance the quality of their lives.

What is Health Coaching?

The International Consortium for Health & Wellness Coaching (ICHWC) defines health coaching as partnering with clients seeking self-directed, lasting changes, aligned with their values, which promote health and wellness and, thereby, enhance well-being. In the course of their work, health and wellness coaches display unconditional positive regard for their clients and a belief in their capacity for change, and honoring that each client is an expert on his or her life, while ensuring that all interactions are respectful and non-judgmental.

Georgetown University’s model of health coaching is built on the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis or care of the whole person. Specifically, we focus on personal growth and development encompassing mind, body, and spirit, addressing the following areas:

  • Healthy Eating
  • Movement
  • Sleep
  • Spirituality
  • Relaxation
  • Joy
  • Work
  • Lifelong Learning
  • Social Connection

What To Expect From Health Coaching

  • Coaches help you discover what is most important to you.  They listen to your concerns and help you develop your vision of optimal health. This may include the use of assessments, powerful questions, mind-body exercises such as imagery, and other techniques.
  • Coaches spend time exploring the specific goals and action steps you wish to address.
  • You and your coach work in partnership to maximize the possibility of your success.  This may include discussion of potential barriers and strategies to overcome them.
  • Coaches support you by providing accountability, affirmation, and facilitating development of subsequent goals.  Coaches may provide additional resources for making healthy behavior changes.

Health coaching sessions last 60 minutes and can be held at Yates Field House, client campus offices, other quiet spaces on campus, or by phone.
